Relationship Advice Reference Section

Relationship Advice Suggested Reading

There are many different aspects to a better marriage or a better relationship. What I have done here is to divide this up into four different areas. They are Marriage Building, Self Help, Life Hacks, and Getting Things Done.

In order to achieve a great marriage there is more that needs to be addressed than just marriage. The best relationship advice will cover marriage, improving self confidence, ways to simplify our life so you have less stress and increased productivity so you have more family time. This reference section covers relationship advice for all of these areas.

Marriage Builders

Below are my relationship advice books that I recommend to strengthen your marriage:

1. The Case for Marriage: Why Married People Are Happier, Healthier, and Better Off Financially by Linda Waite and Maggie Gallagher (Paperback - Oct 9, 2001)

I really enjoyed what this book had to say. It provides ample data as to why married people are healthier, live longer, better off financially, and so on. It was eye opening to me as well helped me to better appreciate the positives to being married.

This book also covered a very detailed study that was conducted by the U.S. Government with thousands of married couples. The eye opening part is what was discovered about the couples whose marriages were in trouble. A group of college professors decided to follow up with those couples to see what had happened to them.

Here is what they learned. Some of them had divorced, but the fascinating part was what happened to those who had stayed together. 88% of those that stayed together reported that their marriages were now very satisfying. The point of this is that most couples have hard times, but many times people can work through those problems if they stick it out.

2. Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In by Roger Fisher, William L. Ury, and Bruce Patton (Paperback - Dec 1, 1991)

This book may seem somewhat out of place for relationship advice since it deals with how to negotiate. It is a book that I first read many years ago when I was an undergraduate student in one of my business classes.

It has many practical applications in dealing with others. It focuses on learning to separate people from issues. In other words, people are not what they do. Someone may say or do something you do not like, but that does not mean that he or she is a bad person.

Finally, the book also gives some great relationship advice and strategies for creating outcomes that are win-win for everyone. Marriage should not be a winner takes all proposition. It is a good book to learn how to focus on outcomes in which everyone wins.

3. How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie (Paperback - Oct 1, 1998)

Dale Carnegie wrote this book many, many years ago, but the timeless relationship advice principles in this book work today just as well as they did then. This book will give you a greater understanding as to why people do what they do. It will also help you to know what to do and say to bond with people, and how to influence them for good.

This book outlines the basic principles that you need to know in order to get along with not only your spouse, but co-workers, family members and people in general.

4. The Greatest Salesman in the World: Gift Edition by Og Mandino (Hardcover - Oct 25, 2001)

It may seem odd that I would recommend a book that appears to be about sales as a book for relationship advice. This book has practical applications for all that we do. All of us are sales people, whether you realize it or not.

What this book focuses on are ten steps to become better at whatever we do. It focuses on persistence, service to others, and adding value. In your marriage, you need to add value and this book will help you do just that.

Self Help Books

1. Giant Steps : Author Of Awaken The Giant And Unlimited Power by Anthony Robbins (Paperback - Sep 1, 1994)

Anything by Tony Robbins is good for everything including relationship advice. I like this one because he breaks up his ideas into small daily exercises. It is just the right size without taking up a lot of time each day, but just enough to keep you focused on self improvement.

Tony focuses on goal setting, thoughts, focus, and various other areas that will help you define who you are and how you will get where you want to be. The book is easy to follow and leaves you without any excuse that this system takes up too much time.

2. As A Man Thinketh by James Allen (Paperback - May 1, 2008)

This book is a classic. James Allen shows the link between thoughts and the results we achieve in life. There is indeed a direct correlation. Mr. Allen demonstrates how thoughts influence actions and reveals your true character.

This is one of those books that I have read time and time again. It is just as refreshing each time I read it. I also gain further insight into where I am in my life and what I need to do to improve. This relationship advice book will help you with your focus and self confidence.

3. The Present: The Secret to Enjoying Your Work And Life, Now! by Spencer Johnson (Hardcover - Sep 23, 2003)

This book is in the same genre as Spencer Johnson’s other books. It is a story about a person who is struggling in his life and happens to meet someone who understands and has some insightful solutions.

The hero of the story has some starts and stops along the way but eventually accomplishes everything that he had hoped for. This book is an easy read, but has some very wise principles about our past, where we are today, and where we want to go. It can be read in a couple of hours, but is packed with great information.

4. The Bible

The Bible has some tremendous insight into how couples should treat each other. For instance, the Four Gospels focus on the Savior’s commitment to the church. He cared for the church. He sacrificed for the church and gave everything for the church.

There is a parallel as to how a man should treat his wife and family. A man should be willing to sacrifice all that he has if necessary for the betterment of his family.

Finally, the Bible teaches a person that as you lose yourself in the service of others, you find yourself. Even if you are not religious, or a Christian, the Bible contains many great teachings that can help you become a better person.

5. The Book of Mormon

This book has taught me much about man and our relationship with Deity. It provided me with teachings that have helped me realize the importance all of us have in the eyes of God. It has brought me much peace and helped me to be a better man. Being a better man, which is an on-going process for me, has helped me feel better about myself. It has also allowed me to have more to offer to my wife. This book can help you as it has helped me.

This book is a great relationship advice book because it teaches principles that build character and that can help you become a better person. By becoming a better person, you become a better spouse.

Getting Things Done

1. Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity by David Allen (Paperback - Dec 31, 2002)

Being able to be more productive is always good relationship advice. David Allen has a very good system for being able to evaluate and manage your to-do-list. The system starts with the idea that you have some way of being able to write down things to do as they come to you. You then evaluate whether or not you should perform the task now, delegate the task or do it later.

Mr. Allen also has a system incorporated into all of this for goal setting, project management, and overall increased productivity. The idea is that as you write things down and organize your life, you free your mind and yourself to perform at a much higher level. Your quality of life is increased and you have much more time for those things that matter most.

2. Any Other Productivity Book by David Allen

Mr. Allen has several other books on productivity and how to organize your life. I endorse all of his ideas.

3. Remember Everything You Read: The Evelyn Wood 7-Day Speed Reading & Learning Program by Stanley D. Frank (Mass Market Paperback - May 1, 1992)

Learning to speed read can significantly improve your life. Reading faster can allow you to read more. Reading more will enable you to learn more. Learning more will increase your self confidence and empower you in your relationship.

The key is learning to turn off the little voice in your head as you read. You will learn how associate words with the images they represent. You will also learn how to effectively scan the page and convert the words on the page into images that will play like a movie in your mind.

All and all, you will be able to read faster, learn more, and have more to give to your marriage.
